Make any text friendly

Paste something dense. You get a friendliness score, the exact sentences causing the damage, one-click plain-word swaps, and six ways to read it. Nothing leaves your browser.

How the score is worked out

Five things get measured, each scored out of 100 and then averaged. Sentence length and word difficulty carry the most weight because they do the most damage. The reading age comes from the Flesch reading-ease formula, which has been in use since 1948 and is what the US Navy still uses to check its manuals.

  • Sentence length: 15 to 20 words is comfortable. Over 30 the reader starts losing the thread, over 45 they give up.
  • Word difficulty: measured in syllables. Four or more and the word is doing more work than it should.
  • Paragraph size: over 120 words a paragraph becomes a wall, and walls get skipped.
  • Active voice: passive constructions hide who does what, which is sometimes the point and usually a problem.
  • Plain language: the phrase list has over a hundred entries taken from plain-language guidance.
